Pink Lady apples.
Shelf price $4.90 at Woolworths (1 kg punnet. End of September 2026, Queensland postcode), 30 Sept 2026.
Where $4.90 goes
- The farmer or growernot published
- Hort Innovation's farm-gate value for apples covers fruit sent to juicing and processing as well as fresh apples, and isn't split by variety, so it isn't a price for Pink Lady apples. No public source gives a current Pink Lady grower price.
- Processing and packingnot published
- Packing, grading and cold storage is done by growers or packhouses, and nobody publishes what it costs per kilo.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- Hort Innovation publishes a wholesale value for all fresh apples, but there is no fresh-apple grower price to subtract from it, so the freight-and-wholesale share can't be separated out.
- Left for the supermarket, plus the farmer or grower and processing and packing and freight and wholesale$4.90 · 100%
- What's left once the published stages are paid. It isn't all profit: it also pays the supermarket's wages, rent, power and its own freight to stores, and the stages nobody publishes. Across the whole business, Woolworths kept $5.50 and Coles $5.70 of every $100 as profit before interest and tax in FY26.
Worth knowing
- Hort Innovation's figures put fresh apples (all varieties) at about $3.66 to $3.73 a kilo leaving the wholesale market (2024/25 and 2023/24 year averages). That covers the grower, packing, storage and freight together and can't be split, so none of it is counted as a stage here.
- The same 1 kg Pink Lady punnet was recorded at anywhere from $4.90 to $8.90 at the two big chains during 2026 (Savings.com.au, which leaves out temporary specials), so the shelf price moves around month to month.
- ABARES' Melbourne wholesale series for Royal Gala apples ran from about 20% below to just over 50% above its January 2024 level over 2024 to 2026.
