The farmer or grower$1.89–$1.95 · 39–40%: Hort Innovation's farm-gate value of bananas divided by tonnes grown: 2023/24 $697.8m ÷ 368,735 t = $1.89/kg; 2024/25 $719.4m ÷ 368,701 t = $1.95/kg. Year averages for all bananas (97% Cavendish), after freight, marketing and wholesale costs are taken out. Source
Processing and packingnot published: Bananas are packed on the farm, so packing is already inside the grower's figure. Ripening happens after the fruit leaves the farm, and nobody publishes what it costs per kilo.
Freight and wholesale$0.41–$0.42 · 8–9%: Hort Innovation's wholesale value of fresh bananas divided by tonnes supplied, minus the farm-gate figure: 2023/24 $845.6m ÷ 367,632 t = $2.30/kg, less $1.89 = $0.41; 2024/25 $871.7m ÷ 367,598 t = $2.37/kg, less $1.95 = $0.42. Left for the supermarket, plus processing and packing$2.53–$2.60 · 52–53%: What's left once the published stages are paid. It isn't all profit: it also pays the supermarket's wages, rent, power and its own freight to stores, and the stages nobody publishes. Across the whole business, Woolworths kept $5.50 and Coles $5.70 of every $100 as profit before interest and tax in FY26.

The grower and wholesale figures are whole-year averages. Weekly prices move a lot with weather and supply: ABARES' Melbourne wholesale banana series ran from about 25% below to nearly 80% above its January 2024 level over 2024 to 2026, and Coles' recorded price was $2.90 a kilo in April 2026 against $4.90 in September.
In March 2026 the Australian Banana Growers' Council said higher fuel levies were adding about $3 to the freight cost of each carton, a cost it said growers were absorbing. That is after the 2024/25 figures used here.
