Regular beef mince.

What the chain gets, so far

We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.

The farmer or grower$10.27–$11.10
Heavy cow over-the-hooks grid rates of 750c/kg carcase weight (southern Queensland plants) to 810c/kg cwt (a large southern NSW grid), week of 20 October 2026 (Beef Central weekly kill) ÷ 0.73 kg of boneless beef per kg of cow carcase (Beef Central's worked example with a processor: a 300 kg heavy cow carcase at 73% yield gives about 220 kg boneless) = $10.27 to $11.10 per kg of boneless beef. Cows are used because, in the same Beef Central example, a manufacturing cow carcase goes almost entirely into the lean trim pack that mince is made from. This charges the whole carcase cost to the boneless meat; bone, offal and hide sales (about $200 a head in the same example, roughly 67c/kg of carcase) are not credited, so it slightly overstates the farmer's part. Cross-check: MLA's Processor Cow Indicator passed 400c/kg liveweight for the first time in the week to 23 October 2026, with southern yards averaging 418c/kg lwt. Source
Processing and packing$2.27–$2.73
Typical kill, bone and pack cost of $500 to $600 per head (Beef Central, from an experienced processor contact, November 2025) ÷ about 220 kg of boneless beef from a 300 kg cow carcase = $2.27 to $2.73 per kg. This is the abattoir's cost to slaughter, bone and carton the meat; the cost of grinding it into mince and packing retail trays is not published and isn't included. The figure is almost a year old. Freight and wholesalenot published
Processors and supermarkets don't publish what it costs per kilo to truck boxed beef to a mince plant or distribution centre and on to stores.

Worth knowing

  • Mince is mostly made from trimmings, the cheaper part of the carcase. In early September 2026 Australian lean (90CL) trimmings were selling for export at about $9.40 to $9.94 a kilo, less than the per-kilo cost of the cow worked out above, so the carcase-average method used here probably gives the farmer a bigger share of mince than the cut really carries.
  • Cattle prices moved quickly in October 2026: rain in Queensland and northern NSW pushed MLA's cow indicator to a record. The farmer figure here is for the week of 20 October and will date fast.
  • We couldn't find a published 2026 shelf price for 1 kg of regular beef mince from a survey or the press, so no shelf price is shown yet.
