White sandwich loaf.

What the chain gets, so far

We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.

The farmer or grower$0.23–$0.25
Wheat at $419.86/t (ASW) to $429.84/t (APW), FOB Port Adelaide, 21 October 2026 (ABARES weekly prices) × 0.546 to 0.588 kg of wheat per loaf = $0.23 to $0.25. Wheat per loaf: 480 g of flour, milled from 588 g of wheat, for a 700 g white loaf (Grain SA, 2015); scaled to 546 g of wheat for a 650 g loaf. A port price includes the cost of trucking and storing grain to the port, so the farmer is paid somewhat less than this per tonne; the up-country deduction isn't in the source. Source
Processing and packingnot published
Flour millers and bakers (George Weston Foods, Goodman Fielder, supermarket in-house bakeries) don't publish what flour costs them per loaf or what it costs to bake, slice and bag one.
Freight and wholesalenot published
No baker or retailer publishes the per-loaf cost of daily delivery from bakery to store.

Worth knowing

  • The wheat in a loaf is a small part of its price. Most of the shelf price goes to milling, other ingredients, baking, packaging, daily delivery and the shop, none of which is published per loaf.
  • The wheat-per-loaf figure comes from a South African grain growers' study of a 700 g white loaf. We haven't found an Australian equivalent; recipes vary between bakeries.
  • We couldn't find a published 2026 shelf price for a plain white sandwich loaf from a survey or the press, so no shelf price is shown yet.
