Butter.
What the chain gets, so far
We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.
- The farmer or grower$1.54–$2.09
- 250 g × 80.5% milkfat (Dairy Australia In Focus 2025, Table A4) = 0.201 kg fat × 2026-27 opening farmgate prices of $7.65 to $10.38 per kg milk solids = $1.54 to $2.09. Only the fat is counted: making butter also produces skim milk powder from the protein and other solids (Dairy Australia: 10,000 L of milk gives 513 kg butter and 900 kg skim milk powder), and the farmer's pay for those goes with the powder. This treats a kg of fat as paid the same as a kg of protein. Processors set separate fat and protein rates that aren't all published, so the real fat share could be higher or lower. For Australian-made butter only. Source
- Processing and packingnot published
- Butter makers don't publish the cost of separating cream, churning and wrapping a 250 g block, or the price they sell at to supermarkets.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- No published per-block figure for chilled freight from factory to distribution centre and store, or for shipping imported butter from New Zealand.
Worth knowing
- A lot of the butter on Australian shelves isn't made here. In 2024-25, imports were 39% of the Australian butter market by volume, and 86% of imported butter and butter oil came from New Zealand. For imported blocks, the Australian farmgate price above doesn't apply.
- For scale: across Australian supermarkets in the year to 13 July 2025, 250 g butter packs averaged $17.23 a kg, about $4.31 a block, across all brands and retailers (Dairy Australia, from NielsenIQ household panel data). That is an average, not one shop's shelf price.
- Butter prices follow world butter prices. ABARES puts the world butter price (a weighted average of traded prices) at US$7,096 a tonne in 2024-25, US$6,317 in 2025-26 and a forecast US$6,208 in 2026-27.
