Cheddar cheese block.
What the chain gets, so far
We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.
- The farmer or grower$2.68–$3.64
- Dairy Australia In Focus 2025 (Figure A2): 10,000 L of milk makes 1,098 kg of cheddar, so 500 g takes 4.55 L. 4.55 L × 0.077 kg milk solids per litre (770 kg fat + protein per 10,000 L) = 0.351 kg milk solids × 2026-27 opening farmgate prices of $7.65 to $10.38 per kg milk solids = $2.68 to $3.64. This puts all of that milk on the cheese. The same 10,000 L also gives 621 kg of whey powder and 28 kg of butter, so the cheese's true share is a bit lower. Source
- Processing and packingnot published
- Cheesemakers (Bega, Saputo, Fonterra and others) don't publish the cost of making, maturing (up to a year for tasty) and cutting and wrapping a block, or what supermarkets pay for private-label cheese.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- No published per-block figure for freight from factory to distribution centre and store.
Worth knowing
- Dairy Australia says mature or tasty cheddar is aged for up to a year, so the cheese on the shelf today was made from milk bought at an earlier season's price.
- The farmer's share per block is about the same for a private-label block and a brand-name one, because both need about the same milk. The price difference sits in the stages nobody publishes.
- Cheese prices follow world prices: ABARES puts the world cheese price (a weighted average of traded prices) at US$4,777 a tonne in 2025-26, forecast to ease to US$4,521 in 2026-27.
