What the chain gets, so far
We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.
- The farmer or grower$3.82–$3.83
- ABARES gross unit value of eggs: 382.8 c/dozen in 2025-26 (estimate) and 382.4 c/dozen in 2026-27 (forecast), so $3.82 to $3.83 a dozen. This is a national average across all grades and all farming systems, cage included. ABARES says the figure includes containers, commission and other costs of getting eggs to their main markets, so it is the price leaving the farm's grading floor, not bare farm cost. No separate figure is published for cage-free or free-range eggs, which cost more to produce, so the real spread between farms is wider than this range shows. Source
- Processing and packingnot published
- Most eggs are graded, washed and packed by the farming company itself, and ABARES' producer figure already includes cartons. Nobody publishes packing as a separate cost per dozen.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- No egg company or retailer publishes the cost per dozen of trucking eggs from the grading floor to distribution centres and stores.
Worth knowing
- 'Cage-free' covers barn-laid and free-range eggs. The farmer figure here is an average over every kind of egg, including cage eggs, so it may understate what free-range farms receive. Nobody publishes the gap.
- Egg prices rose sharply in 2024-25 after H7 bird flu outbreaks in 2024 and 2025 sharply cut the number of laying hens. ABARES says flocks have since been rebuilt and farm egg prices fell about 2% in 2025-26. H5 bird flu was found in Australian wild birds from June 2026 but not, as of September 2026, in commercial poultry.
