Washed potatoes.
Shelf price $4.25 at Coles (2 kg washed bag at $8.50, shown per kg. End of September 2026, Queensland postcode), 30 Sept 2026.
Where $4.25 goes
- The farmer or growernot published
- Hort Innovation's farm-gate value for potatoes mixes fresh potatoes with potatoes grown on contract for chip and crisp factories, which are about two-thirds of the crop by weight, so it isn't a price for supermarket potatoes. No public source gives the fresh-market grower price.
- Processing and packingnot published
- Washing, grading and bagging is done by growers or packers, and nobody publishes what it costs per kilo.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- Hort Innovation publishes a wholesale value for fresh potatoes, but with no fresh-market grower price to subtract from it, the freight-and-wholesale share can't be separated out.
- Left for the supermarket, plus the farmer or grower and processing and packing and freight and wholesale$4.25 · 100%
- What's left once the published stages are paid. It isn't all profit: it also pays the supermarket's wages, rent, power and its own freight to stores, and the stages nobody publishes. Across the whole business, Woolworths kept $5.50 and Coles $5.70 of every $100 as profit before interest and tax in FY26.
Worth knowing
- Hort Innovation's figures put fresh potatoes at about $1.48 to $1.66 a kilo leaving the wholesale market (2023/24 and 2024/25 year averages, all fresh potato types). That covers the grower, packing and freight together and can't be split, so none of it is counted as a stage here.
- The same 2 kg bag was recorded at anywhere from $5.50 to $8.50 at the two big chains during 2026 (Savings.com.au, which leaves out temporary specials), so the shelf price moves around month to month.
