Field (round) tomatoes.
What the chain gets, so far
We don't have a shelf price for this yet: we only use published or shopper-reported prices. Once there is one, what's left for the supermarket shows here. Add the price you paid.
- The farmer or growernot published
- Hort Innovation's farm-gate value for tomatoes includes tomatoes grown for paste and canning (about half the crop by weight) and all fresh types together, so it isn't a price for field tomatoes. No public source gives a current field-tomato grower price.
- Processing and packingnot published
- Grading and packing is done by growers or packers, and nobody publishes what it costs per kilo.
- Freight and wholesalenot published
- Hort Innovation publishes a wholesale value for all fresh tomatoes, but it mixes field tomatoes with cherry, truss and roma, and there is no field-tomato grower price to subtract from it.
Worth knowing
- Hort Innovation's figures put fresh tomatoes at about $3.02 to $3.27 a kilo leaving the wholesale market (2023/24 and 2024/25 year averages). That mixes in cherry and truss tomatoes and covers the grower, packing and freight together, so none of it is counted as a stage here.
- Tomato prices swing hard with supply. In 2023 the North Queensland Register reported field tomatoes falling from up to $70 to about $14 a 10 kg box within about two months.
- No dated supermarket shelf price for field tomatoes was found in a published survey or news report, so there is no shelf price yet.
